Importance of a Daily Routine

Why is it Important to Have a Daily Routine?

It is no secret that successful people have a daily routine. It takes resilience and perseverance to commit to changing your daily activities but by repeating them we can all make small, positive changes to our daily lives. In fact, successful people don’t wait for opportunity, they create it. By making some healthy changes in your daily routine, you too can optimise your energy levels and keep focused on your next goals, however big or small they might be. By taking small steps daily, you will be sure to reap the rewards.

If 2020 has taught us anything (aside from zoom calls and watching the best Netflix shows), it is how important our health really is, and how by making some new daily habits we can live feeling more positive and healthier. As we enter the first month of the New Year, here at Harmoni we’ve come up with five reasons why it is important now, more than ever before to have a daily routine.

1. Manage your time more efficiently

Organise your time efficiently by scheduling a daily structured morning routine. Whether it is simply getting up and dressed for the day, or perhaps you like to have a coffee or a stretch in the morning, by repeating these habits every day (even on the days when you don’t really feel like getting out of bed!) you will be well practised and able to start the day off positively.

Try planning your day the night before to help manage your ‘To Do List’ and stay ahead of the game and organised when it comes to achieving your goals. Apps such as Notion and Trello are great tools to help you stay focused and productive!

Make sure to be realistic when you make your daily schedule. A tip we recommend is to write down three things you will do the next day and after each once has been achieved, tick them off and even write a little sentence underneath once you’ve finished. This will help you stay positive about why you have achieved this goal and how it has helped you! This is great if you are struggling with a task, or even struggling to find the motivation. When we break down our goals into smaller chunks, they are far easier to achieve.

2. Stay motivated

Sometimes when we have so much on our plate, it can feel overwhelming at times to start our day and so we spend hours procrastinating over the task at hand. This is when it can be really useful to use a notebook or planner to write down your goals and your daily schedule. Additionally, some advice which I was given whilst at University was to talk to myself how I would a little child!

Whilst this might seem ridiculous, it can actually be really beneficial in helping to create some positive self-talk which will not only help you feel better about yourself, but also help motivate you to complete the task at hand. When we are feeling calmer and generally happier, we are more likely to be more efficient and motivated to do our work.

3. Maintain a healthy work balance

Often when we are working throughout the day, we might find ourselves unable to switch off in the evening. We recommend incorporating a relaxing evening routine into your daily habits. By doing simple things such as switching off any smartphones an hour before bed, you will instantly reduce the amount of blue light exposed to your eyes and increase your ability to fall asleep.

Try incorporating some relaxing down-time before going to sleep such as journaling, using a face mask or listening to some chilled music. It’s super important to maintain a healthy work balance around your own life; making sure you devote time to your loved ones and have plenty of time around your work to sleep and relax!

4. Keep on track of your goals

Set clear goals for yourself and your intentions as part of your daily routine in order to maximise your time and energy. Try visualising your success, that way you always have an image in your head to come back to at the end of the day. Often the hardest part is not creating the idea, but sticking to your vision.

To keep on track of your goals, incorporate some time in the week to refocus and assess whether you are on track to achieve your goals for that day. By incorporating some healthy habits into your daily schedule such as going for a walk and doing some light exercise, this will help clear your head and refocus. Other physical exercise such as yoga is great for relieving stress - even a few light stretches will help balance your current mental state and improve your physical health.

Yoga is also scientifically proven to reduce anxiety. After two weeks of meditation, research found that meditation helped people to focus and improved their memory on one section of the GRE by sixteen percent points.

5. Push Your Limits

You may not even realise you are doing it, but by continuously setting new goals and striving after them, you are pushing yourself beyond your current limits. Just like when you exercise your muscles if you do a workout at the gym, by pushing yourself to finish your work efficiently to a high standard; you are building strength and resilience into your daily routine. Your daily routine will adapt over time as you pick up new, more helpful habits which allow you to complete a task quicker (perhaps without you even realising this).

It is this willingness to take risks however which really pushes you to go outside of your comfort zone to achieve your greatest potential! It probably doesn’t seem like it today, but all the small daily activities you take everyday have a larger overall impact on becoming a better version of yourself in the future! Why not invest in your future by taking some small steps today?

Conclusion

It's really important to have a daily routine in order to maximise your productivity and develop a strong routine which you can carry out effortlessly. Research shows that it takes sixty-six days to create a new habit! By planning ahead and staying organised, you will be sure to reach your targets and develop healthy, stable habits which will give you happiness for years to come!
